Rick Drury's Flightlines in June's (2002) Airways Magazine is great reading for anyone in Hong Kong.

The lesson is contingency planning - be prepared for the worst and hope that it never happens.

He is in the simulator...

Its a clear VFR day in HKG - but 30 degrees C.

He is at MGTOW - and needs maximum power for take off. As the gear retracts they lose two engines. Dumping fuel they have to descend ever so slightly to build up some speed.

Missing the Tsing Ma bridge by a matter of feet they head down the West Lamma channel at 100 ft (30 metres). There are a lot of container and other ships to dodge. A slight climb out over the south China Sea allows them to read the emergency checklists and complete a two engine out approach and landing !!!

Rivetting. These guys are great professionals !

Enjoy the article. To make it really interesting he is an Fedex MD-11 captain - this was a one engine approach !
