The
wonderfully talented and slightly mysterious Faye Wong is embarking on a
World Tour in 2004. She has recently played in Kuala Lumpur and will be in
Shanghai in late May and in Singapore on 2 June.
She is Asia’s undisputed diva. In
glowing terms the Singapore ticket booking site gushes:
"Since shooting to fame in the early 90s, reigning queen of pop Faye Wong
has distinctively set her status as one most inspiring and appreciated pop
singer with her unique vocals, bold individuality and talented infusions
of new sounds and music approaches.
With more than 20 chart-topping studio albums generating tens of millions
of sales worldwide, uncountable award recognitions and string of concerts
across the globe over 15 years, Faye is definitely one remarkable music
talent that remain well-received by music lovers of all times."
Me; I almost met her once; she was
having dinner in the Louisiana restaurant at the Beijing Hilton where I
was staying. They had closed the restaurant for her. I asked the rather
ugly bouncers at the door if I could just go in and say hallo to her. Not
a chance.
An ex colleague once gleefully
called me to say that he was having lunch at the Sukothai hotel in Bangkok
and that Faye and Carina Lau were having lunch at the next table.
When she last played in Singapore
(1999 I think) I was in the very front row for an outstanding concert.
I saw her once in Hong Kong as well,
at a Heineken sponsored concert with Richard Marx, the Gypsy Kings and Wu
Bai.
She will shortly be seen at Cannes
with the Wong Kar-Wai's long awaited and often re-written film "2046".
Faye Wong stars alongside Maggie Cheung and Zhang Ziyi.
